[There's a pause and an audible click before Wash opens his door. Half the ship and the entire anon meme know he's booby-trapped his room because of Reaper; that he has to take a moment to disarm the traps isn't too much of a leap in logic.]
Thanks for coming.
[He opens the door and lets Chief inside. From his position curled up comfortably on the bed, DC yawns widely in greeting.]
[ The Chief steps in and takes a moment to glance around the room as Wash settles the Reaper traps. ]
What did you need?
[ He notices the little gray shape of the cat, and that's where he's looking when Wash finishes. He knew Wash had a cat, but he hasn't had an occasion to meet the animal yet.
He's seen cats before, but not often and not very close. ]
It was the time travel bullshit that was going around. I- the version of me that you talked to, I guess- was from a few years into the past, and...those were really bad years. I honestly thought someone was calling me pretending to be you, because why would the Master Chief of all people give a shit about me?
I mean, I know that's not the case now, but... [Have a long-suffering sigh.] Time travel.
[ The Chief exhales, the closest he really gets to involuntary expressions of relief. He was sure he'd messed something up, possibly while affected by the time instability himself. His memories from that are still coming back together. ]
It's fine.
[ It really is. And while he would've insisted it were fine the other way too, would've retreated until he could make it right (or indefinitely if he couldn't), this is definitely the better "fine" of the two. ]
[He's just gotten back from a mission that...well, hopefully it was worth the cost...to see the call to arms against the Spectre. He doesn't bother saying anything - he knows he'd be more of a liability than an asset there, and that the Spectre would chew him up and spit him back out - but Chief is going.]
[And despite how locked down and distant he's made himself right now, something still twists in his chest and he can't not say something.]
[ The acknowledgment light next to the Chief's name on Wash's HUD flashes, and soon enough he's there.
Despite this deck being secure (for now at least), there's still a fretful energy in the air. No one has had a moment's peace since the Brainiacs began their attack, every nerve on Legion World is pulled tight. Even now, though, the Chief manages to seem almost serene. He's at home in desperate chaos. ]
Wash?
[ It's only when he comes close that Wash can pick up that he's tense, it's subtle in his body language even by fully-armored-person standards. It's not quite as easy on him as he likes to make it appear. ]
Before Out With the Old

Cortana too, if she wants.

[ He confers briefly with Cortana. ]
She'll listen, but she's busy with something right now.
[ But they've both noticed that it's an olive branch, and she didn't reject it. ]
[ The Chief makes his way over to Wash's, and knocks when he gets there. ]

[Not that Chief has much of a sense for slapstick, but this is a distraction plan more than anything else. Any ideas that come out of it are a bonus.]
[Then he sees where Chief's attention is, and...well, that works too.]
Have you met DC yet?
[The kitten perks up and meows. That's his name! Hi!]

Are you okay? As in actually okay, not the psychological equivalent of "running on biofoam and stubbornness."

Given how Baldwin's acting, the safe bet is he killed someone on camera and it blew back on him.
[She's designed to gather and analyze information. This isn't a hard one.]

That would explain a lot.
[ He shakes his head a little. ]
You worried about me?
